課程概述

*This course is conducted in Chinese.
*This course is open only to CLS students.
*No auditing is allowed.
*The first lesson is to be given in the first week. Students are recommended to bring their laptops or tablets.

This course aims to equip graduate students with knowledge and skills necessary for writing English essays. To this end, this course starts with essential components that lay the foundation for developing paragraphs, then moves towards the smooth transition from paragraphs to essays, and culminates in developing essays of five types. In addition to paragraph and essay development, the course pays especial attention to grammatical functions. In-class writing exercises, post-class writing and reading tasks, and take-home assignments, along with lectures and discussions, will be given to students to strengthen their understanding of the course content. Classroom activity is designed to facilitate both individual and collaborative learning of students.

課程目標
By the end of the course, students will achieve the following learning outcomes:
1. Understanding paragraph and essay structures
2. Identifying writing features in paragraphs and essays
3. Utilizing English grammar to fulfill specific purposes
4. Demonstrating familiarity with vocabulary frequently used in academic writing
5. Self-editing sentence problems and conducting peer reviews
課程要求
1. Students should attend all classes (physical and online).
• Leave of absence should be required via email.
• 3 unexcused leaves of absence guarantee course failure.
• Each late arrival takes away 1 point from GPA.
• Students should turn on the camera if synchronous online classes are to be given.

2. Students should actively participate in classroom activity.
• Participation includes, but is not limited to, the following:
 Coming to class fully prepared
 Paying full attention to lectures
 Discussing with teammates and giving feedback to one another
 Collaborating with teammates to complete learning tasks
 Completing assigned reading and writing tasks
 Asking questions to clear confusion of whatsoever
 Answering questions given by the course instructor to enhance student-teacher interaction

3. Students should complete writing assignments that are carefully scheduled as stages towards the fulfillment of the course aim.
• There are 3 take-home assignments (HAs).
 HA1 is an individual assignment that requires students to write an independent paragraph of 150-200 words.
 HA2 is a team assignment that requires students to give a presentation and produce a comparison /contrast essay of 600-800 words.
 HA3 is a team assignment that requires students to give a presentation and produce an argumentative essay of 800-1000 words.
• There are 3 in-class team writing assignments (CAs).
 CA1 requires students to write a cause/effect essay of 400-500 words.
 CA2 requires students to write a process essay of 400-500 words.
 CA3 requires students to write a classification essay of 400-500 words.
• Assignments should be submitted on time.
• Late assignments receive a B- (1 week late) or a zero (2+ weeks late).
• Receiving a zero on the individual assignment (HA1) guarantees course failure.
• Failing to fulfill assignment (HAs and CAs) requirements automatically reduces one’s grade to a lower letter (e.g., from A- to B+).

4. Students should take weekly tests and the final exam.
• Students who do not take the final exam will be failed.
• If students cannot take any of the tests as scheduled, a make-up test is available and there will be a 20% reduction in the score.
